Preserving Syrian Art and Music

Art of Aleppo

Years after the war broke out in Syria, millions of Syrians were displaced throughout the world. Through the talent of Amar Chebib, an award winning filmmaker, Reed Society spread awareness of Syria’s cultural and spiritual riches and shed light on the perseverance of the Syrian people. Wajd, Amar Chebib’s documentary, had audiences fall in love with the main musician, Ibrahim Muslimani, and invested in his journey of preserving his culture’s musical and spiritual heritage.

Today Ibrahim Muslimani is thriving despite so many hardships and set backs in the Gaziantep region of Turkiye where he has founded and directs the Nefes Foundation for Arts and Culture. He is also the founder of the Nawa Band, which was recorded below by Lost Origin Sound Series.

“(Director) Amar Chebib crafts
a constellation of experience where narrative time oscillates between
the sweeping, rare footage of pre-
war Syria’s cultural majesty and into present-day formations of
refugee life.”
