Islamic Geometric Patterns: Green Mosque (Yeşil Camii)

Join us for another hands-on workshop exploring the timeless beauty of Islamic geometric patterns, presented in collaboration with MathArtPlay, a project at the intersection of mathematics and art.

In this workshop, participants will learn how traditional geometric patterns are constructed using circle division with a compass and straightedge. Starting from simple geometric constructions, participants will build a repeating pattern inspired by designs found in the Green Mosque (Yeşil Camii) in Iznik, Turkey, built during the Ottoman dynasty in 1392 CE (794 AH). Patterns like this appear in latticework screens and carved wooden doors, where repeating geometric structures create intricate designs while allowing light and air to pass through architectural spaces.

Alhambra Patterns: Stories of Lines and Curves

Join us for a hands-on workshop exploring the timeless beauty of Islamic geometric patterns found in the Alhambra. Presented in collaboration with MathArtPlay.

This workshop shows how lines and curves—built on square and circular grids—come together to form rich, repeating patterns. Participants will work through the construction of two historical Islamic geometric patterns found in the Alhambra in Granada, Spain (13th–14th century). Similar designs also appear in Seljuk Anatolia (13th century) and later across North Africa—particularly in Morocco (14th–18th centuries)—highlighting a shared geometric approach across regions and time.

The workshop is led by Dr. Rebin Muhammad, a mathematician, educator, and artist originally from the Kurdistan region of Iraq, and Alexandra Veremeychik, an Islamic geometric artist. Participants will construct two Alhambra patterns and compare how similar visual designs can arise from different underlying grids—one based on a square grid and the other on a circular grid.

The Art of Tehzib (Illumination) with Behnaz Karjoo

Tehzib is a traditional art practiced in many parts of the Muslim world for over a millennium, derived from zahab, the Arabic word for gold. It was primarily used to decorate manuscripts, but over time it came to be appreciated as an independent art form, practiced either alongside calligraphy or on its own.

This hands-on introductory workshop invites participants to delve into the basic techniques of the art of illumination (Tezhib). After a brief introduction to its history and tools, participants will learn step-by-step techniques to paint a small design using fine brushes, imitation gold, and gouache. Through this meditative process, they will deepen their appreciation for the patience, precision, and beauty at the heart of this intricate art form and walk home with their own small illuminated piece.

Music for the Eyes: An Artistic and Spiritual Retreat in New Mexico

Private Viewing of Original Manuscripts at the New York Public Library with Dr. Hiba Abid

Join Reed Society in NYC to meet Dr. Hiba Abid, the New York Public Library's first Curator of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. Dr. Abid, an art historian and codicologist of Arabic manuscripts will share a special collection of manuscripts of the beloved Dalā’il al-Khayrāt.

Dr. Abid earned her PhD in Islamic Art History and Codicology at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Paris) under the supervision of François Déroche (Collège de France) in 2017. Her dissertation was dedicated to the manuscript tradition and the iconography of a Sufi prayer book, the Dalā’il al-Khayrāt of al-Jazūlī (d. 1465), in North Africa from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

Private Viewing of Manuscripts with Master Calligrapher Dr. Nihad Dukhan

Dr. Nihad Dukhan is a certified master of Arabic and Islamic calligraphy and a professor of mechanical engineering. He received his Ijazah (master of calligraphy degree) in Thuluth and Naskh styles from Istanbul grand master calligrapher Hasan Çelebi in 2009, and in Taliq style in 2013 from master calligrapher Mohamed Zakariya. He obtatined ijazah in Dewanee and Dewani Jali from Abdul Razzak Qaraqash in 2023. He also studied Taliq Jali with Mustafa Parıldar and Riqaa’ with Mahfod Thunnon. Dukhan has developed his personal modern form of Arabic calligraphy around 1989. His work has been exhibited and sold around the world.

Object Focus: Accordion Album of Calligraphy by Seyh Hamdullah

Celebrated calligrapher Şeyh Hamdullah (1436-1520), known as the father of Ottoman Calligraphy, established a tradition of calligraphy that is still practiced by artists today. His works are prominent in an accordion album, Album of Ottoman Calligraphy, which is one of only three known pieces in the United States that includes the innovative calligrapher’s signature. Join world-renowned calligrapher Mohamad Zakariya; Ashley Dimmig, Wieler-Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow in Islamic Art; Aisha Imam, Reed Society for the Sacred Arts; and independent scholar Nancy Micklewright in a virtual exploration of this important calligraphy album in the Walters collection, followed by a discussion of Şeyh Hamdullah’s legacy and the living art practice of Islamic calligraphy in the mid-Atlantic region.
